Is It Really Dry Skin… or Is Your Skin Just Dehydrated? | Skin Care 101 – Lesson 2

Welcome back to Skin Care 101, where we’re learning simple skincare tips for healthier, more radiant skin.

Have you ever said,

“My skin is so dry.”

What if your skin isn’t actually dry?

Many people confuse dry skin with dehydrated skin, but they aren’t the same thing. Knowing the difference can completely change the way you care for your skin.

Let’s take a closer look.

Lesson at a Glance

In this lesson, you’ll learn:

  • The difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin.
  • How to tell which one you have.
  • Why treating the wrong condition can make your skin feel worse.
  • Simple ways to help your skin feel healthier.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is a skin type.

It naturally produces less oil than other skin types.

Common signs include:

  • Tightness
  • Flaking
  • Rough texture
  • Dull appearance
  • Skin that feels dry all year

Because dry skin lacks oil, it usually benefits from products that help nourish and support the skin’s protective barrier.

Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin is not a skin type.

It’s a temporary condition caused by a lack of water, not oil.

Even people with oily skin can have dehydrated skin.

Common signs include:

  • Tightness after cleansing
  • Skin that looks dull or tired
  • Fine lines that appear more noticeable
  • Skin feeling tight while still looking shiny
  • Products absorbing very quickly

Why It Matters

If you think dehydrated skin is dry skin, you might keep adding heavier oils and creams when what your skin really needs is hydration.

Healthy skin needs both:

💧 Water (hydration)

and

🌿 Oil (nourishment)

These work together to keep your skin comfortable and balanced.

Nurse Lessie’s Tip 💛

After cleansing, ask yourself:

Does my skin feel tight?

If the answer is yes, your skin may be asking for hydration.

That’s why I recommend applying a hydrating product first, then following with a nourishing facial elixir to help support your skin and lock in that hydration.
